Hey there, it’s Graham again, and today I want to teach you about how to learn the skill of public speaking. Now, before you start shaking in your boots, consider that public speaking is one of the number 1 things that you can do to increase your self-confidence.

There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that public speaking is one of those things where you get to challenge your fears. You’re going to be stepping into the fear zone every time that you do it, and as a result of doing that over and over the amount of fear that you feel is going to gradually reduce and you’re going to feel more and more confident over time by learning how to do the art of public speaking.

The second reason why public speaking is great for your confidence is that you learn communication skills, and often our lack of confidence really stems simply from the fact that we never learnt how to communicate powerfully when we were younger. So now as an adult, we’re walking around in the world with a whole bunch of ineffective communication strategies that don’t really work, that don’t get us the result that we want and so we end up thinking that there’s something wrong with us, we somehow lack confidence because we can’t seem to get our needs met by the way that we’re communicating.

So learning public speaking is a great way to overcome these two challenges: one, overcoming the fear; and, second, building your communication skills so that you can learn to get what you want in life.

So the easiest way to learn public speaking is to join a public speaking club, and the largest public speaking club in the world is one called Toastmasters. And chances are, unless you’re living in the antarctic – and maybe they even have it down there, who knows – there will be a public speaking club, a Toastmasters club, near you where you can go, meet a bunch of like-minded people that are all into developing their communication skills and you can start doing a bit of public speaking in front of a small group where it’s not like too freak-out intimidating. And also they know what it is that you need to learn because everybody else there is learning it too.

Toastmasters have an educational program that you can work on. It’s very cheap because the amount of money you’ve got to pay basically just keeps the club running and a little bit to keep the organization going. So it’s an absolute bargain, and you’ll learn communication and leadership skills all at the same time.

Now, did Toastmasters for around about three years, and it gave me this effortless ability to just rave on at a camera, just kind of like I did in the video above.

But don’t let that put you off if that’s putting you off. What I recommend you do is you track down a Toastmasters club near you and you go pay them a visit. Clubs always love having visitors. If you give them a call beforehand, they will be able to welcome you and greet you. Even if you just show up, you can turn up and just watch what other people get up to when they’re doing a bit of public speaking. It’s often quite fun and engaging, and when it’s not you can have the opportunity to tell them why it wasn’t and how they can improve.

So I recommend you get out there, look up a Toastmasters club in your area, go pay them a visit, consider joining because learning the skill of public speaking is definitely one of the most powerful things that you can do in order to build your confidence, your leadership skills and your communication skills all at the same time and have a little bit of fun in the process.
